Why It's Green
Under the Nile offers an alternative to conventional cotton apparel for infants and children. All products are made from 100% handpicked organic cotton, without the use of pesticides or chemicals throughout the entire production process. Grown exclusively in Egypt, the products reflect the extremely soft and durable features that Egyptian cotton is known for. Under the Nile's dyeing process uses metal-free or vegetable dyes. Accessories such as buttons and zippers are made from organically friendly elements such as wood, shell or nickel-free metals. The line is EDI compatible.
Made at a Fair Trade Farm in Egypt. Demeter certified. Workers are provided with health care, organic meals and schools.
Prior to founding Under the Nile in 1997, company president Janice Masoud worked as an apparel designer for 14 years. When searching for organic products for her young children, who were experiencing allergic reactions to conventionally manufactured products, she discovered organic Egyptian cotton at the Sekem Initiative Farms in Egypt, and immediately started working with the farm on a line for the U.S. market.
Back then, organic cotton was not readily available, so I thought about starting a company to make organic baby clothes that could benefit my own children as well as others,. explained Janice.
The Sekem Farm provides a worldwide model community for biodynamic agriculture and a workplace that is fully supportive of its workers, from educational programs to health care. From the cottonseed to the spinning and weaving of yarn to the sewing process, Under the Nile ensures that every manufacturing step is completely toxin free.

Conventionally grown cotton uses more pesticides than any other crop. Believe it or not more than 10% of the world's insecticides and 25% of pesticides are used in cotton production. Cotton producers also use some of the most dangerous chemicals on the market including those derived from toxic nerve agents developed during the second world war.
These pesticides are harmful to farm workers, neighboring communities and schools, beneficial insects, domestic and wild animals and soil micro organisms. Water runoff contaminates lakes and rivers, killing fish and other marine life. Ironically, massive spraying of pestides causes massive outbreaks of secondary insects, leadiing to crop losses and a vicious circle of spraying.
The organic label tells you that the cotton was grown according to USDA standards. Only non GMO seeds may be used, soil is kept healthy through crop rotation and supplementation with organic matter and beneficial insects. Organic cotton is processed into cloth that may either be left in its natural beige state or whitened with safe peroxide instead of harmful chlorine bleach. Natural soybean softening is used as well as vegetable based, heavy metal free dyes. The initial cost of organic cotton baby clothes may be slightly higher but the long term advantages are priceless. Babies are born with sensitive skin and many babies react to conventional fabrics with painful, itchy rashes and allergies. Organic cotton baby clothing, organic baby toys and organic cloth diapers are the soft, safe choice. Atlantis Natural carefully sources the highest quality organic cotton baby products. We have worked with most of our suppliers for years and we know and trust their fair trade manufacturing processes. We offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee and 365 day no hassle returns.
